Why are harassment and violence risk assessments important?

Did you know a massive 60% of Canadian workers have experienced harassment in the workplace according to a survey conducted by the Government of Canada.

Your reputation matters

  • Did you know 90% of professionals research the culture of a company before accepting a role? If you want to attract top talent, you need to have a good reputation as an employer
  • Almost half of these professionals use employer review websites such as Glassdoor, Indeed and even Reddit. How is your online reputation?
  • People talk. People will always talk, you want them to say good things about you as a employer
  • Do customers/clients consider a business’ reputation as an employer before using them? Ask yourself, do you? We certainly do!

It's the law

  • Did you know that under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act employers are required to conduct a workplace violence risk assessment?
  • It is also a requirement for federal employers under the Canada Labour Code Part II and the Workplace Harassment and Violence Prevention Regulations.
  • Many employers are not meeting the Provincial or Federal requirements in terms of harassment and violence
  • If an inspector comes to your workplace you could be issued fines for not complying with the appropriate legislation
  • Court cases can result in hefty fines and bad publicity. Have you seen a case in the news lately about an organization ignoring workplace harassment and violence issues? How do you feel about them?

Workplace Harassment and violence can lead to:

Employee absenteeism

  • How many people do you have off sick today? Does this cost you money? Does this affect the staff who came in to work?
  • Work absences of full-time employees in Canada has increased from 9.5 total days a year missed in 2016 to 11.6 total days in 2020.

Presenteeism

  • Do you feel like any of your employees are showing up and doing the bare minimum?
  • Presenteeism occurs when employees are physically at work, but mentally elsewhere. It is often due to unhappy employees and it causes productivity to plummet.

High turnover

  • What’s your company's turnover rate?
  • How much does advertising for, interviewing, hiring, and training a new employee cost?
  • How well do you retain your talent?
  • How do you retain your talent?

Employee burnout

  • Burnout exhausts employees’ mental health, physical health, and company resources
  • Disgruntled employees can become insider threats
  • Employee burnout causes excessive mental health sick days (Absenteeism)
  • Employee burnout creates disillusionment among employees who often start slacking (Presenteeism)
  • These exhausted employees may often quit, which creates a greater employee turnover (Turnover)
  • Employee burnout leads to a toxic workplace and employees criticizing the business online/in person, creating a poor company reputation (Reputation)
